Donor-Advised Funds

Giving to Impact France from your donor-advised fund (DAF)
While different DAF providers have various interfaces, you should generally be able to search for us by name or by our EIN: 20-3098434. Once found, you will “recommend a grant.” There is typically an obvious space to indicate a comment/purpose, which is where you would note a designation for a specific ministry project if you wish to do so.

To learn more about donor-advised funds, read on.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is like your own mini-foundation or charitable savings account. You make contributions to it and receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to other charities over time, typically in a convenient online interface. It’s called a donor-advised fund because once you donate to it, you no longer legally control the funds. Rather, you recommend to the manager of your DAF to make grants to other charities. While they are not legally obligated to follow your recommendation, they generally do so with no issue.

  • Optimize your tax deductions in a given year, but retain flexibility over when you ultimately give to your favorite causes.
  • Receive one receipt for income tax purposes.
  • Donate assets that would otherwise be difficult or inconvenient to split between charities.
  • “Wall off” money for philanthropy rather than it becoming co-mingled with your personal budget.
  • Depending on the DAF provider, investment options may be offered so that your contributed funds earn interest or gains, to not only keep up with inflation but maximize your future impact.
  • Anonymous gifts are easier, if that is important to you.

Impact France does not offer DAFs due to the significant backoffice support needed to run them. However, many large reliable organizations do, even those affiliated with brokerage firms such as Fidelity, Vanguard, Schwab, and others. As far as Christian DAF’s, the list is smaller.  National Christian Foundation (NCF) was the pioneer in this space and is still the largest Christian DAF. Others include Waterstone, Signatry, and Cru Foundation. We encourage you to research options yourself based on the potential features or fees involved.

DAFs are available to givers of any level. Anything that you would normally donate to charity can be accepted by a DAF – cash, stocks, mutual funds, cryptocurrency, and in some cases real estate – it depends on the DAF provider.  Tax deductions work the same as for other charities: Cash donations are deductible up to 60% of your AGI, while appreciated assets like stocks let you deduct their fair market value (up to 30% of AGI) – see our section on stock donations for information on that.
