Gifts of Stocks or Securities

Gifts of stock or other traded securities

Do you have publicly traded securities, such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds, or ETFs which have appreciated in value? If you have owned these for over a year, there are major tax benefits to donating these assets. For example, instead of selling an appreciated stock and owing capital gains taxes, you can donate it directly to Impact France – eliminating the tax and maximizing the amount that goes to Kingdom-building purposes.

See if your brokerage has a ready-to-use securities transfer form to fill out.  If not, contact them and say you’d like to donate shares to see what kind of Letter of Authorization (LOA) they may need.

On their form or letter template, indicate your brokerage account number as well as the stock symbol and number of shares you want to donate. You can also indicate the tax lot you want to give if it is not the entire position. For the account receiving securities, please use our details below, and then inform us of your gift and its designation at donors@impactfrance.org.

Receiving Firm: Charles Schwab
Receiving account name: IMPACT FRANCE
Receiving account #: 5616-3564
Firm/DTC Number: 0164

The donation value is determined by the stock’s fair market value. For publicly traded stocks, this is generally the average price on the date when your securities are transferred out of your brokerage account.

A cash donation to charity is deductible up to 60% of AGI (Adjusted Gross Income), while for a non-cash donation such as stocks, it is deductible up to 30% of AGI.  For example, if you donate $20,000 worth of stock in a given year and your AGI is $80,000, you can deduct all of it. If your AGI is $50k, you can only deduct $15,000 (30%).

Let’s say you have a stock position which cost you $10,000, and today it’s worth $20,000.  If you sell the stock, you’d owe tax on the $10,000 capital gain.  But if you donate the stock, you avoid the tax and you can deduct the entire $20,000 from your taxable income.
