Donating from IRAs

Important terms
IRA: Individual Retirement Account – if you have a traditional IRA, this page is for you!
RMD: Required Minimum Distribution – a mandatory distribution from a retirement account
QCD: Qualified Charitable Distribution – a donation to charity directly from a retirement account

Donating from your retirement account once you are subject to RMDs can be a tax-smart giving strategy during retirement years.

By making a QCD from your retirement account, you can satisfy the RMD in a given year without increasing your taxable income.  You can benefit whether or not you itemize deductions on your tax return.  The alternative would be taking the RMD yourself and then donating, but the tax deduction you get may not fully offset the increase in your taxable income.

Anyone 70 ½ and older at the time of the transfer, although RMDs are not required till age 73. Individuals can donate up to $111,000 through QCDs, or double this amount for married couples if both are eligible to do so. (information accurate as of 2026)

Request from your retirement account manager that a QCD is made to Impact France, providing the details below as necessary, and inform us of your gift and its designation at donors@impactfrance.org
